Upstream: A Year On

Well, what a year 2018 has been for the Upstream Team!

It doesn't seem five minutes since we were setting up shop, however, we've managed to cram so many exciting things into these past twelve months.

We thought we'd do a quick round-up of what we've been up to.


Starting out in January this year, our health startup has gone from strength-to-strength.

We set out with an aim to make a difference for clinicians and patients around the world and - without tooting our own horns - we truly believe that we've laid the foundations to achieve this.

Since then, we've developed a number of health and social solutions, working with companies and NHS organisations across the UK. We've expanded our team and even moved into our own space.

Becoming members of Hull's Centre For Digital Innovation (C4DI) was a natural step for our CEO Darren Crombie and later this year, we moved into our own office space on the third floor of the gold-clad tech hub.

Darren originally selected this spot due to the community's shared ethos and close ties with the tech sector. It's safe to say that we have embraced the community, attended so many insightful events and collaborated with a lot of fellow members, including Nerdonic, Sauce and Bloom.


One of our biggest achievements this year has been securing a place on the Health System Support Framework - a list of third-party supplies at the leading edge of health and care system reform.

The framework can be used by any NHS organisation, such as NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups. This huge step has enabled us to start improving the lives of clinicians and their patients through technology.

A fantastic example of this is our Social Care Radar solution that we are providing to Hull City Council after the local authority received a grant from NHS Digital.

Another wonderful moment for us was finding out Upstream had been selected as a partner by Microsoft for Startups, a $500 million programme that offers new businesses the opportunity to access the company’s latest technology and their network of accelerators, incubators and startup-enabling organisations.

Meanwhile, we have also had the incredible opportunity to work with Humber Teaching, who provide mental health, primary care and community-based healthcare across the region. Upstream's Trust Integration Engine promotes the efficiency of patient discharges, as well as requests and results via a digital platform.


In the new year, we're very excited to begin deploying more of our solutions across the UK, after having interest from organisations in Plymouth, Manchester and Bristol.

Our Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) solution - which we will be revealing more about in January - is at the top of this list.

As always, our aim is to continue to strive towards our overarching goal of a shift to upstream preventative care.
